Mgmt Was Good

July 28th, 2008 · No Comments

Played yesterday.  Totally rad.  Really.  Pool was packed.  Lots of pretty people.  Free towels (and free drinks, too!).  Folks from out of town.  Lovely day.

Two things of note:

1) MGMT went to Wesleyan so much it just fucking hurts.  We’re talking purple pants and orange ponchos, gold track jackets and an aquamarine guitar.  It’s like a bunch of archetypal Williamsburg hipsters (average age 19, say) all hopped into one of their parents’ minivans, drove it to Bonnaroo, did too many drugs while watching the Disco Biscuits, and then came back to Brooklyn wearing all sorts of knitwear and robes or whatever.

2) Maybe it’s because of the aforementioned Bonnaroo incident, but MGMT in concert sounds nothing like MGMT in studio.  They resemble a jam band more than anything: overextended guitar solos, long instrumental breaks, and surprisingly little of the album’s electronic pop.  The result is much, much better than the album, and it makes me take the band quite a bit more seriously than if they’d continued down the course of, say, Justice.
