Some Puff Pieces Are Good, But Some Suck

November 17th, 2008 · No Comments

Computer is broken, sitting in the shop like dead weight.  No posts.  But I had to be roused from my postless coma to mention how shitty the following NYT piece is.  Entitled “12 Year Old’s a Food Critic, and the Chef Loves It,” this is the worst piece of journalism for the entire month of [...]

Fergus Henderson @ Momofuku

November 4th, 2008 · 2 Comments

Had only one day to try some of Fergus Henderson’s menu items at Momofuku Noodle Bar.  Henderson is the chef at London’s St. John restaurant, has earned renown for using offal, and last night completed a one-night-only guest appearance at Momofuku.  Whaddya know, a lot of offal last night - on the menu, if not [...]

Why Is Wordpress Spelling Ny Like That?

October 4th, 2008 · No Comments

Went home for a few days, and during that time had a chance to see some wicked condo-fication, of the same sort that’s going  on here in Brooklyn.  Or was going on, I should say.  The New York Times Magazine real estate supplement just came out, and actually published a piece about the DC market, [...]

Jetblue’s New Terminal (eater)

September 23rd, 2008 · No Comments

Went to JFK yesterday for the unveiling of the new JetBlue terminal.  To wit:

Quite the ceremony yesterday at JFK Airport, with JetBlue rolling out their renovated terminal to employees, press, special guests, and all manner of dignitaries. Bloomberg was on hand, as were Queens Borough President Helen Marshall, a number of congressmen and senators, Port [...]

Bars I’ve Gone To Recently, Volume 2

September 18th, 2008 · No Comments

It’s been a couple months since volume 1, and I’ve been to far more bars than I have space to discuss.  The highlights:
Hotel Delmano: Williamsburg’s most expensive bar has quickly become a favorite.  Sure, ordering a $13 drink isn’t something you want to do all day, every day, but the quality of the mixed drinks, [...]

Burrito “wrap-up” Volume 3 Addendum

September 12th, 2008 · No Comments

Crucial addendum: yesterday, for the first time since graduating college, I had a burrito from Chipotle.  It was so fucking good - so much better than the mediocre burritos I deal with on a near-daily basis - that I feel the need now to assert this chain’s superiority, to celebrate their innovations, and above all [...]

Burrito “wrap-up” Volume 3

September 11th, 2008 · No Comments

It’s time again to discuss my favorite gut-busting subject.  I haven’t had any new burritos of late, but I returned to Taco Chulo, Yola’s, and Tacobite.  In brief:
Taco Chulo’s burritos are terrifying and massive.  I forget what I got but it was just way too much food, and I believe it contributed to nearly a [...]

You Are A Good Deal, Bouley

September 8th, 2008 · No Comments

Bouley, the Tribeca pillbox/fancy restaurant, has a killer lunch menu - 6 courses for $48 and of course endless amuses bouches.  The best part, though, is the carpet.  Unlike in France, where cushy flooring seems mandatory for a three star grab, you don’t see too much carpet on restaurant floors around here.   This makes total [...]

Review Of The Century: Hawaiian Tropic Zone Restaurant

August 17th, 2008 · No Comments

I recently saw the bill from my visit to Hawaiian Tropic Zone sitting in a file folder, getting ready to be expensed.  That made me happy, as did my visit to the perplexing, exceedingly tacky, and surreal place that is the Hawaiian Tropic Zone, “The Hottest Place on Earth.”

Indeed.  Hawaiian Tropic Zone melds two completely [...]

Burrito “wrap”-up Volume 2

August 7th, 2008 · No Comments

Tacobite (South 4th and Rodney, Wburg) - This was a dark horse, but it’s quickly become one of my favorites.  The burrito itself was pretty good - I forget what I got, but I remember thinking it was tasty - but more importantly it came with free chips and a delicious, spicy salsa.  (By the [...]
